Prevent strategy – Reporting Concerns
In Portsmouth, authorities and communities are working together to deliver the Government’s Prevent strategy through the Community Safety Partnership. The strategy is set up to challenge all forms of terrorism, including the influence of violent far right extremists.
The focus of Prevent is identifying people who may be vulnerable to radicalisation or getting involved in extremism, and supporting them in order to help protect them from harm. Radicalisation is comparable to other forms of harm and abuse and is treated as a safeguarding issue.
If you have any concerns that an individual may be at risk of radicalisation, please make a referral via the National Referral Form here. The information provided will be assessed by the local authority safeguarding team and the Prevent policing team.
There is no single route to radicalisation and it can affect anyone irrespective of race, ethnicity, religion, age, gender, background etc.
Signs may include:

- Secretive behaviour
- Showing sympathy for extremist causes
- Glorifying violence and supporting illegal groups
- Losing interest in friends and activities
- Out of character changes in dress, behaviour and peer relationships
- Possessing illegal or extremist literature
