Portsmouth’s young people are the future of the city and its reassuring to know that 97% of them were not convicted of a criminal offence last year. Our work over the last few years has seen a continual reduction in youth crime of almost 50% since 2007/08. However we will continue to focus on early intervention and protection for young people and their families that diverts them from entering the criminal justice system
The Safer Portsmouth Partnership works in partnership with the Children's Trust Board to reduce crime within the city. Both boards recognise the importance of supporting young people achieving good outcomes with the Safer Portsmouth Partnership recognising young people at risk as one of their long term priorities while Priority D of the Children's Trust Board is to provide 'targeted support for children and young people who demonstrate behaviours that put them at risk'. Both these priorities are directly accountable to the 14-19+ Partnership Board.
These partnerships ensure that there is:
Focus on prevention and early intervention to ensure that limited resources are allocated in areas that deliver most impact on improved outcomes for children and young people.
Ensure that work with children and young people is appropriately targeted, taking into account the needs of young women as well as young men.
Work to reduce young people at risk of poor outcomes across a number of issues. These include preventing young people entering the criminal justice system as well as improving school outcomes, preventing the misuse of substances etc. Work includes providing support alongside challenging unacceptable behaviour.
Work to understand the broader family context in households where young people are at risk of poor outcomes.
Continue to develop work to reduce reoffending by young people.
