Young People

Portsmouth’s young people are the future of the city and its reassuring to know that 97% of them were not convicted of a criminal offence last year.

Our work over the last 6 years has seen a reduction in youth crime of over 24% and we will continue to focus on early intervention and protection for young people and their families that diverts them from entering the criminal justice system

Who we are

The Young Person’s Safer Portsmouth Partnership (YPSPP) is a multi agency group created to reduce anti-social behaviour, offending and substance misuse.

We are made up of many partner agencies, including:

  • Hampshire Constabulary

  • Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service

  • Portsnmouth NHS

  • Portsmouth City Council

  • Wessex Youth Offending Team

  • Motiv8

  • Other agencies from the voluntary sector

The group is accountable to the Safer Portsmouth Partnership (SPP).

The YPSPP has recently been reformed and we are now more closely aligned to the Children’s Trust Board, which is focussed on three age groups. YPSPP reports to the 14-19 group, but does have representation on the other age groups.

What we do

Listed below are the key deliverables of the YPSPP:

  • Focus on prevention and early intervention to ensure that limited resources are allocated in areas that deliver most impact on improved outcomes for children and young people.

  • Ensure that work with children and young people is appropriately targeted, taking into account the needs of young women as well as young men.

  • Work to reduce young people entering the criminal justice system through providing support alongside challenging unacceptable behaviour.

  • Work to understand the broader family context in households where offending and/or anti-social behaviour is prevalent.

  • Continue to develop work to reduce reoffending by young people
