The partnership has launched a 12-month operation to reduce alcohol-fuelled violence in the city on July 27.

With Operation Drink Safe the police are determined to send a clear message to revellers who get out of control. That they should drink and act more responsibly.

Police analysis shows 21 per cent of all public order, common assault and incidents of actual bodily harm in Portsmouth take place in the centre of the city, with 10 per cent taking place in just three streets - Guildhall Walk, Guildhall Square and Commercial Road. 

Safer Portsmouth Partnership is keen to change people’s attitudes towards drinking. It wants to discourage a night out for young men aged 16 to 25 meaning heavy drinking and a fight.

There will be a focused effort to use exclusion order powers to ban convicted violent offenders from all pubs and clubs in the city for up to two years.

The operation has a huge marketing and media campaign supporting it which includes 10,000 beer mats, 10,000 posters, a cinema campaign, radio campaign and press launch.
